A supercharged, super green seat of learning

Education will provide the platform for economic regeneration and sustainable growth.

The town already has excellent educational facilities, including the Athlone Campus of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).
In our vision, Athlone will become one of Europe’s leading centres for environmental innovation and green technology. The student population will grow from 6,000 up to 25,000. supported by an expanded university campus across 50 hectares and a new 5000-strong student village. Young people from across Ireland, Europe and the globe will be attracted to a learning and research environment that emphasises STEM, green technologies, and life sciences.

The investment in education will stimulate startup clusters, which in turn will generate high quality jobs and employment opportunities. It will nurture a knowledge-based economy with expertise in multiple sectors, including those critical for energy transition and climate adaptation. This, in turn, will strengthen Ireland’s attractiveness to foreign direct investment (FDI) and bolster the nation’s talent pipeline.
