Ireland’s population is forecast to grow rapidly in the coming decades.

The Central Statistics Office’s (CSO) medium forecast is for a further 1.1 million citizens by 2057. That’s almost another Dublin.

This rapid growth must be balanced with national targets to decarbonise the economy, restore and rewild our land and seas, rebalance development away from Dublin and the east coast, and stimulate the economy through enterprise, skills and innovation.
To help address these challenges, a vision has taken shape to establish a new city in the centre of the country. For the past seven years we have been engaging with key stakeholders including political figures and specialists in green technologies and infrastructure. As a result Athlone is emerging as a credible blueprint for addressing Ireland's demographic and environmental challenges.

There is a compelling case for establishing a new green city in the heart of Ireland.

The masterplan will see Athlone transformed from a town of 23,000 to a thriving university city, with a student population of up to 25,000 at its core and a total population of at least 50,000, expanding to over 100,000.
